Un enlace covalente (covalent bond) es una conexión química de intercambio de pares de electrones entre átomos. Dicha conexión permite a cada átomo alcanzar una capa de valencia completa y su consecuente estabilidad electrónica. El enlace covalente representa una unión entre entidades distintas que forman una nueva individualidad mantenida por este intercambio químico constante.
La frontera es un espacio compartido entre dos o más países y puede ser impuesta tanto por un límite geográfico cuanto por entidades políticas tales como gobiernos y estados soberanos. Su establecimiento refleja la complejidad de los intercambios entre realidades político-culturales distintas por medio de la guerra, la colonización o acuerdos mutuos de delimitación de límites.
Como un enlace covalente, la frontera permite un intercambio entre fuerzas de realidades distintas que entran en equilibrio. A lo largo de la historia, ella ha sido testigo de los flujos migratorios motivados por la guerra, las hambrunas, la peste y este incesante ímpetu humano de ir más allá de los límites del espacio visible. En el mundo contemporáneo y bajo la lógica del capital, los flujos migratorios están permeados también por las necesidades de la producción.
La frontera se erige en el medio geográfico como un accidente, casi una ilusión óptica en el paisaje circundante. Vista desde satélite, es todavía más evidente su artificialidad en el contexto en que se inserta. Las imágenes de satélite reflejan la uniformidad del espacio circundante a los lados de la frontera y la interrupción a modo de espejismo que esta provoca en el paisaje: la frontera no fragmenta solo el territorio, sino también la vida y los cuerpos de los que habitan a su alrededor, creando un complejo nudo de relaciones permeadas por su presencia omnipresente.
Covalent bonds reivindica la materialidad de la frontera desde la inmaterialidad de la imagen. La frontera es esta línea abstracta, por veces sin cualquier conexión con el espacio geográfico, que divide realidades siempre confrontantes por su contigüidad y permeabilidad. Objeto de atracción y repulsa, la frontera ha sido a lo largo de la historia cuestionada, atacada, rediseñada y marcada en el cuerpo y mente de aquellos que se atrevieron a cruzarla. Penetrarla es un gesto simbólico de ocupación y confrontación de uno consigo mismo desde la imagen proyectada en el otro.

A covalent bond is a chemical connection of exchange of electron pairs between atoms. Such a bond allows each atom to attain a complete valence shell and consequent electronic stability. The covalent bond represents a union between distinct entities that form a new individuality maintained by this constant chemical exchange.
The boundary is a shared space between two or more countries and can be imposed either by a geographical limit or by political entities such as governments and sovereign states. Its establishment reflects the complexity of exchanges between different politico-cultural realities through war, colonization or mutual boundary delimitation agreements.
As a covalent link, the border allows for an exchange between forces of different realities that enter into equilibrium. Throughout history, it has witnessed migratory flows motivated by war, famine, pestilence and this incessant human impetus to go beyond the limits of visible space. In the contemporary world and under the logic of capital, migratory flows are also permeated by the needs of production.
The border is erected in the geographical environment as an accident, almost an optical illusion in the surrounding landscape. Seen from satellite, its artificiality is even more evident in the context in which it is inserted. The satellite images reflect the uniformity of the surrounding space on either side of the border and the mirage-like interruption it causes in the landscape: the border not only fragments the territory, but also the lives and bodies of those who live around it, creating a complex knot of relationships permeated by its omnipresent presence.
Covalent bonds claims the materiality of the border from the immateriality of the image. The border is this abstract line, sometimes without any connection to geographical space, that divides realities always confronting each other by its contiguity and permeability. Object of attraction and repulsion, the border has been throughout history questioned, attacked, redesigned and marked in the body and mind of those who dared to cross it. Penetrating it is a symbolic gesture of occupation and confrontation of oneself with oneself from the image projected on the other.
